Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hit out at Liverpool as he labelled the visitors the ‘much more defensive side’ in their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Mourinho was roundly criticised for the way his United team played at Anfield in the first Premier League game between these two fierce rivals this season, as he secured a 0-0 result away from home.
But this time, Mourinho said the roles were reversed as he accused his opposite number Jurgen Klopp of playing defensively to get a result at Old Trafford.
‘When we played the game in Anfield, we had chances to win the game too but we were very defensive and we were heavily criticised for that,’ he said.
‘Today it was the opposite. Liverpool were much mroe defensive, they defended with 10 players in the second half.
‘With good players you alwlays have the chance to score on the counter-attack, but today was the opposite, we were the attacking team and Liverpool were the defensive one.’
Mourinho said while the game was exciting, it was not one that had plenty of quality.
‘I don’t think the game had super quality,’ he said.
‘The game as a game didn’t reflect the quality that we have and the quality Liveprool has and that we have shown during the season.
‘It was intense and aggressive. We fought until the last second to try and win it and they did the same not to lose it.
‘They were clever, they stopped the game, they took their time … they knew they were in trouble and that the last five or six minutes would be very diffuclt, but they coped well.’
